Situated in southern Chautauqua County, the Watts Flats Wildlife Management Area provides an easy walk through several habitat types including wetland, field, and forest. The sign pictured here is at the location marked “West Parking” on the map below. The spot marked “East Parking” is easy to miss – a gated maintenance road tucked between privately owned residences.
The New York State DEC manages the area to provide habitat for a variety of resident and migratory species. Over 70 species of birds breed here. Waterfowl commonly nesting include Hooded Mergansers, Wood Ducks, Mallards and Canada Geese. Nesting warblers include Canada, Mourning, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Hooded, Blue-winged, American Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat. Sparrows breeding here include Swamp, Song, Savannah, Field and Chipping. The endangered New York State raptor Northern Harrier nests in the swamp areas blanketed with Leatherleaf.
In addition to Beaver, mammals that are common to the area include White-tailed Deer, Muskrat, Mink, and Raccoon. Rare but occurring in the area are Porcupine and Black Bear.
